Tra il terzo e il quarto secolo ad Alessandria d’ Egitto, un medico curava non solo i corpi, ma anche le anime.
Si tratta di San Ciro, il patrono della città di Grottaglie che è stato festeggiato in questi giorni con tre giorni di grande festa e molto entusiasmo della gente locale.
San Ciro aveva la caratteristica di indirizzare sulla retta via tutti coloro i quali commettevano degli errori e cadevano in tentazioni diaboliche. Fu proprio questa sua dote a recare fastidio al prefetto della città, Siriano, che ordinò il suo arresto.
Allora San Ciro si ritirò nel deserto, dove raggiunse un perfetto stato di serenità e religiosità. In questo periodo conobbe Giovanni di Edessa e a causa sua dovette ritornare in Alessandria, dove fu arrestato, martirizzato e seviziato con terribili supplizi.
Durante il Medioevo il suo corpo fu trasportato a Roma e solo più tardi a Napoli. Proprio a Napoli viveva il Gesuita Francesco De Geronimo che divenne Santo e compatrono di Grottaglie, devoto di San Ciro e ha portato il corpo del Santo nella sua città natìa: Grottaglie.
Dal 29 al 31 Gennaio, a Grottaglie, si assiste non solo Luna Park, fiere ed eventi, ma anche all’ accensione della pira, in memoria del posto dove originariamente San Ciro è stato bruciato vivo.
La tradizione è molto forte e sentita da tutta la popolazione che settimane prima inizia a raccogliere rami di alberi e legna per costruire una grande pira con la foto del Santo. La mattina prima dell’accensione si usa entrare dentro e toccare la legna, come segno di devozione.
La sera si può assistere ad uno spettacolo davvero emozionante: il Sindaco e il Parroco della città tengono un discorso in onore del Santo e dopo uno spettacolo pirotecnico fatto di una vasta gamma di colori e forme che si accendono nel cielo nero della sera, inizia una processione di circa quattro persone che con delle fiaccole entrano nella pira e così inizia l’incendio!
L’atmosfera è davvero suggestiva e per circa un’ora lingue di fuoco si innalzano nell’oscurità come se fosse oro colato.
I colori sono bellissimi e la tradizione è così viva e sentita che non è assolutamente possibile non emozionarsi!

The tradition is very strong and felt by the entire population that weeks before starting to collect tree branches and wood to build a large pyre with the picture of the saint. The morning before is used to get inside and touch wood, as a sign of devotion.
In the evening you can attend a really exciting show: the mayor and the parish priest of the town held a speech in honor of the saint and after a fireworks display made of a wide range of colors and shapes that light up in the dark sky of the evening, start a procession of about four people with torches entering the pyre and so begins the fire!
The atmosphere is really impressive for about an hour and tongues of fire rise into the darkness as if it were liquid gold.
The colors are beautiful and the tradition is so alive and felt that it is absolutely impossible not to get excited!
